Drug Smugglers Tunnel Underground Into the U.S.
Nobody can say that criminals are not at least creative. United States Border Patrol agents discovered a series of underground tunnels starting in Mexico and ending across the border in Nogales, Arizona that drug traffickers had been using to smuggle illegal drugs into the United States. The system involved a number of metered parking spots on International Street in Nogales, which lines the border wall. On the Mexican side of the border, drug traffickers tunneled underground and cut small squares into the asphalt under the metered parking spots across the border. Counterparts on the American side of the border would park cars with false bottoms in the spots, feed the meter and leave for a short period of time while people in the tunnels would load drugs into the cars. Workers underground would then use jacks to put the patch of asphalt back in place and seal up the hole. According to reports from local law enforcement agents, the seams left by the holes in the ashpalt were only detectable to bystanders who might be exceptionally observant. Of the 18 available metered parking spaces on that stretch of International Street, local law enforcement agents found 16 holes with connected tunnels, which have all since been patched and secured. On the advice of Homeland Security agents, the mayor of Nogales, Arturo Garino, agreed to remove the parking meters, eventhough the city stands to lose as much as $8,500 per year in revenue from meters and parking citations.
