One of the founding members of the famous Pointer Sisters singing group of the 1970s and 80s was arrested by local law enforcement agents for possession of a controlled substance last week in Los Angeles. Bonnie Pointer was stopped by local police in Los Angeles just before one o'clock in the morning on Friday, November 18th. The singer, who left the Pointer Sisters early on to pursue a solo singing career, was arrested and taken to a nearby police station where she was held on $100,000 bail. The 61-year-old Pointer was released from police custody around 4:30 that morning and is being charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Reports have not indicated which controlled substance Pointer is accused of carrying at the time of her arrest and court dates have not yet been announced.

The overwhelming majority of drug crimes in California, however, are actually considered felony criminal offenses which can land you in jail or even a state prison for several years. Jail or prison sentencing can be complicated as they typically involve a "base" term which is often the mandatory minimum a judge must sentence a person to if convicted of a drug crime. Aside from the base term, the judge may then take into account such factors as the defendant's prior criminal history and whether or not firearms, violence, theft or injury occurred (typically called status or conduct enhancements) as a result of the crime to lengthen a person's sentence. An experienced
